What is ceramic coating?
A ceramic coating is a professional paint protection treatment designed to preserve your vehicle’s original paintwork and enhance its appearance.
It forms an invisible, durable shield over the paint, helping protect against light scratches, bird droppings, tree sap, chemical staining, harsh weather, and UV exposure.
Ceramic coating is a liquid nano-ceramic polymer that bonds to your car’s clear coat, forming a semi-permanent, hardened, transparent shield. Unlike wax or sealants that sit on the surface and wear off, a ceramic coating fuses with the paint and resists UV fading, bird droppings, tree sap, road salt, grime, and iron fallout. The result: paint that stays glossier, cleaner, and better protected for years.
At J.R Detailing we use professional, installer-only ceramic coatings that need proper surface prep and controlled application — far more durable than consumer spray-on products.
Why Ceramic Coat Your Car?
A ceramic coating is a professional paint protection treatment designed to preserve your vehicle’s original paintwork and enhance its appearance.
It forms an invisible, durable shield over the paint, helping protect against light scratches, bird droppings, tree sap, chemical staining, harsh weather, and UV exposure.
Benefits of a ceramic coating include:
Creates a super-slick protective layer over your vehicle’s paintwork
Makes it harder for dirt, road salt, tar, brake dust, and grime to stick
Helps reduce paint damage from bugs, bird droppings, and contaminants
Protects against UV rays and paint oxidation
Strong hydrophobic properties that repel water and improve gloss
Makes future washing and maintenance significantly easier
Ceramic coating doesn’t just protect your car — it keeps it looking cleaner, glossier, and better maintained for longer.
How We Apply Ceramic Coating
Ceramic coating isn't a quick spray-and-wipe job. Proper application takes time, precision, and the right environment. Here's how we do it at J.R Detailing:
Step 1 — Decontamination Wash We start with a thorough multi-stage wash to remove all surface dirt, grime, and loose contaminants. This includes a pre-wash, snow foam, and a careful hand wash using the two-bucket method to avoid inflicting any new scratches.
Step 2 — Chemical Decontamination We apply iron fallout remover and tar remover to dissolve bonded contaminants that a wash alone cannot shift. These are the invisible particles — brake dust, industrial fallout, and road tar — that embed into your clear coat over time.
Step 3 — Clay Bar Treatment: After chemical decontamination, we clay-bar the entire vehicle. This physically removes any remaining embedded contaminants, leaving the paint surface completely smooth and ready for the next stage.
Step 4 — Paint Correction (If Required) If your paintwork has swirl marks, light scratches, or oxidation, we'll correct these with machine polishing before applying the coating. This step is critical — a ceramic coating amplifies whatever is underneath it, good or bad. We want to lock in perfection, not imperfections.
Step 5 — Panel Wipe & Inspection We wipe down every panel with an IPA-based solution to remove any polishing oils or residue. The surface must be completely clean and bare for the ceramic coating to bond properly. We inspect the paint under high-intensity lighting to confirm it's ready.
Step 6 — Ceramic Coating Application The coating is applied panel by panel, by hand, using a specialised applicator. Each panel is coated, allowed to flash, then carefully levelled to ensure even coverage with no high spots or streaks. Depending on the package, multiple layers are applied with curing time between each.
Step 7 — Curing The coating needs time to cure and fully harden. We'll advise you on curing times and what to avoid during the initial curing window (typically no washing for 7 days and avoiding rain exposure where possible in the first 24–48 hours).
Frequently Asked Questions
-
Ceramic coatings provide a durable, invisible layer of protection over your paintwork. Benefits include increased gloss, resistance to UV damage, chemical staining, bird droppings and road grime, strong hydrophobic properties, and significantly easier maintenance. Your car stays cleaner for longer and retains its finish.
-
Longevity depends on the coating used, vehicle usage, and maintenance. Professionally installed ceramic coatings typically last anywhere from 1 to 7+ years when correctly maintained. Regular safe washing and optional maintenance visits help maximise performance and durability.
-
Yes. The most common cause is improper washing. Hand and automatic car washes often use harsh chemicals, dirty wash media, and poor drying techniques, which can clog or degrade the coating. With correct aftercare and maintenance, a professionally applied ceramic coating will perform exactly as intended for its full lifespan.
