Why Summer Is Harder on Your Paintwork Than Winter

Ask most drivers when their car's paint is most at risk and they'll say winter. Road salt, grit, constant rain, filthy roads. It's the season everyone associates with protection.

They've got it backwards.

Winter damage is slow and largely cosmetic. Summer damage is fast and often permanent. The worst paint I see all year comes in during August and September — and the owners are almost always surprised, because the car has spent three months looking clean.

Here's what's actually happening to your paintwork right now.

Bird droppings are acidic, and heat makes them worse

This is the single most damaging thing that lands on a car, and it's massively underestimated.

Bird droppings are acidic — typically somewhere between pH 3 and 4.5, comparable to vinegar. On a cool day on an unprotected car, you've got maybe a day or two before there's a problem. On a hot bonnet in direct August sun, the picture changes completely

Two things happen at once. The heat accelerates the chemical reaction between the acid and your clear coat. And as the dropping dries, the moisture evaporates and the acid concentrates — so it becomes more aggressive as it sits there, not less.

The clear coat softens slightly in heat too, which means the acid bites deeper.

‍ ‍

The result is etching: a permanent dulled outline in the shape of the dropping, still visible long after the mess itself has been washed away. On a hot day this can happen in under two hours.

‍ ‍

Light etching can be polished out. Deep etching sometimes can't be removed without taking away more clear coat than is safe. I've seen cars where a fortnight in a supermarket car park under a tree left permanent marks across an entire roof.

‍ ‍

What to do: carry a bottle of quick detailer and a microfibre in the boot. Remove droppings immediately — not when you next wash the car. Soak the area, wait thirty seconds, then lift the dropping away without rubbing. Rubbing drags grit across the paint and adds scratches on top of the etch.

Park under a lime, sycamore, or pine in July and you'll come back to a bonnet flecked with sticky spots.

‍ ‍

Sap isn't acidic like bird droppings, but it bonds mechanically to the clear coat, and heat makes it flow into the microscopic texture of the paint before it hardens. Once it's set in strong sun it becomes genuinely difficult to remove.

‍ ‍

The damage usually isn't the sap itself — it's what people do to get it off. Fingernails, scouring pads, kitchen cleaners, and neat solvents cause far more harm than the sap ever would.

‍ ‍

What to do: dedicated tar and glue remover, applied to a microfibre rather than sprayed on the panel, left to dwell for a minute, then lifted gently. Never scrape. If it doesn't shift, it's a clay bar job.

‍ ‍

UV is quietly destroying your clear coat

‍ ‍This one has no dramatic moment. Nothing lands on the car. It just happens, every sunny day, for years.

‍ ‍UV radiation breaks down the polymer chains in your clear coat. The layer gradually loses its ability to stay flexible and transparent. You get oxidation — that chalky, faded, slightly powdery look, most obvious on horizontal panels because they take the most direct sun.

‍ ‍Roofs, bonnets, and boot lids age faster than doors on almost every car for exactly this reason. Reds fade to pink, blacks go grey, and eventually clear coat can start to delaminate and peel — which is unrepairable by polishing and needs a respray.

‍ ‍The UK gets far more UV than people assume. You don't need Spanish sunshine to get UV damage; you need a decade of British summers and no protection.

‍ ‍What to do: this is precisely what ceramic coatings are built for. A coating takes the UV load instead of your clear coat. It's also the argument for protecting a new car early — the damage is cumulative, so protecting at year one is worth far more than protecting at year six.

‍ ‍

Water spots etch in minutes when it's hot

‍ ‍Wash your car on a hot day and the water evaporates before you can dry it. What's left behind are the dissolved minerals from your tap water — calcium and magnesium — sitting on the surface as a ring.

‍ ‍On a cool day that's a nuisance you can wash off. On a hot panel, those minerals bake on. Given a bit of time and heat, they etch into the clear coat and become a permanent mark that needs machine polishing to remove.

‍ Sprinkler systems are worse again. Borehole and irrigation water carries far higher mineral content than mains water, and cars parked beside a watered lawn all summer can end up with severe, widespread spotting.

‍ ‍What to do: never wash in direct sunlight. Early morning, late evening, or in shade. Work one panel at a time and dry it before moving on. Never let the car air-dry in the sun.

Hot panels make washing more dangerous

‍ ‍

There's a mechanical problem too, separate from the chemical ones.

‍ ‍

Warm clear coat is softer than cold clear coat. Wash a car with hot panels and you inflict more marring than you would on a cool one — same technique, same mitt, worse outcome. Shampoo also dries on the surface faster, leaving you scrubbing at partly-dried soap, which is exactly how swirl marks get created.

‍ ‍

Summer is when most people wash their cars most often. It's also when each wash does the most harm. That combination is why so many cars arrive here in September looking noticeably worse than they did in May.

And then there's the driving

‍ ‍

Summer means more miles, more motorway, more windows down, and more of the car's front end catching things.

‍ ‍

  • Insect splatter is acidic and bakes onto bumpers, bonnets, and mirrors within hours at speed

  • Fresh tarmac on resurfaced roads throws hot bitumen up the sills and lower panels, where it bonds hard

  • Pollen is mildly acidic and holds moisture against the paint

  • Dust and grit from dry roads sits on the surface, ready to be dragged across it by the next wash

None of these are catastrophic alone. Together, over a summer, they're a significant contamination load on paint that's already softened by heat.

What summer protection actually looks like

‍ ‍

You don't need to do all of this. But in rough order of value:

‍ ‍

1. Get the contamination off properly A summer's worth of sap, bugs, and fallout doesn't come off with shampoo. It needs chemical decontamination — iron fallout remover and tar remover — followed by a clay bar treatment. This is the foundation. Skip it and everything after it is compromised.

‍ ‍

2. Correct the damage that's fixable Light etching, water spots, and the swirls accumulated from summer washing can be machine polished out. Doing this now, before autumn, means you head into winter with paint in genuinely good condition rather than damage that gets buried under six months of road salt. 3. Protect what you've restored Bare corrected paint is at its most vulnerable. A ceramic coating gives you UV resistance, chemical resistance against droppings and sap, and a hydrophobic surface that makes washing safer and easier. It also means you're protected going into winter, so you're covering both seasons with one job.

‍ ‍

4. Change your washing habits Free, and it matters more than most products. Wash in shade. Two buckets. Clean microfibre drying towels. Never let the car dry itself in the sun. Keep a quick detailer in the boot for droppings.

The best time to do this is now

‍ ‍

There's a practical argument for getting paintwork sorted in late summer rather than waiting.

‍ ‍

Correction and coating both need controlled conditions and curing time. Coatings cure better in warm, dry conditions than in a damp November. And if you get it done now, you go into winter with protected paint — meaning road salt sits on a coating rather than on bare clear coat.

‍ ‍

Booking in October means competing with everyone else who has just noticed the weather turning. Late summer is quieter, conditions are better, and the timing genuinely works in your favour.
